JLA collaboration with the JOIC

17 October 2021

The JLA are pleased to be invited to work with the JOIC, with the aim of supporting landlords through the process of registering as a Data Controller and handling data in compliance with the law. We visited them last week and began work on developing a toolkit to support landlords to be compliant in matters relating to data privacy, which would serve as a useful checklist for compliance in data handling. A similar checklist for tenants is also being planned.

Remember that if you collect or hold ANY information that could be used to identify an individual (even if it is just one thing, such as their name) then you are obliged by law to register. A reminder about JOIC registration is to be included in Lodging House renewal paperwork, which the Population Office sends annually in November.

Their doors really are open if you have any queries or issues, whether that be questions about registration, ensuring your practice is compliant, handling data breaches or responding to a subject data request.

We are pleased that they are keen to offer further training for JLA members, and hope to be able to set this up very soon. Likely topics will be on handling a subject data request, handling a data breach and practical support for handling information for current, historic and potential tenants. Members will be notified with further details of these and they will be made available in the Members’ Area of the JLA website.

In the meantime, JLA members can view the training session run by the JOIC for our members in October 2020 and can contact the JOIC for an informal chat on 01534 716530 or enquiries@jerseyoic.org
